Lab results are only as good as the sample that produced them. A surprising number of "failed" bacteria tests are actually sampling errors โ€” water that picked up bacteria from a dirty faucet aerator or an outdoor spigot, not from the well itself. Getting the technique right takes an extra five minutes and can save you a confusing, worrying result.

Before You Collect

Choose an indoor cold-water tap that draws directly from the well line, ideally one without a water softener or filter in between (test before treatment, unless you're specifically testing treated water). Remove the aerator screen from the faucet if possible โ€” aerators trap sediment and bacteria that don't reflect your actual water quality.

Step-by-Step Collection

  1. Run the cold tap for 5-10 minutes to flush the line and pull water fresh from the well, not water that's been sitting in the pipe.
  2. If your lab's kit includes a sterilizing step (common for bacteria tests), follow it exactly โ€” usually a brief flame or bleach-wipe of the tap opening.
  3. Reduce the flow to a gentle stream before filling โ€” a full-blast stream can cause splashback and contaminate the sample.
  4. Open the sample bottle only right before filling. Don't touch the inside of the cap or bottle.
  5. Fill to the line indicated on the bottle โ€” don't overfill, and don't rinse the bottle first if it's a lab-provided sterile container.
  6. Cap immediately and label with the date, time, and source tap.

Getting It to the Lab

Bacteria samples are time-sensitive โ€” most labs require the sample to arrive within 24-30 hours of collection, refrigerated but not frozen. Chemical panels (metals, nitrates) are more forgiving but still shouldn't sit for more than a few days. If you're mailing a sample, same-day or next-day shipping is worth the extra cost.

Common Mistakes That Skew Results

Sampling from an outdoor hose bib, sampling right after running the dishwasher or washing machine, and sampling from a tap with a leaky washer that lets outside water seep in are the most common ways a well water sample stops accurately representing the well itself.
