PFAS โ per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances โ are a large family of synthetic chemicals nicknamed "forever chemicals" because they resist breaking down in the environment or the body. They aren't part of a standard well water test panel, so if you haven't specifically asked for a PFAS test, you don't have data on it yet.
Research on long-term PFAS exposure has linked it to increased cholesterol, reduced vaccine response, thyroid disruption, developmental effects during pregnancy, and increased risk of kidney and testicular cancer for certain compounds. Effects generally relate to cumulative exposure over years rather than a single test result.
In 2024, the EPA finalized enforceable Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) for PFOA and PFOS at 4 parts per trillion (ppt) each, along with limits for several other PFAS compounds and a combined "Hazard Index" for PFAS mixtures. As of mid-2026, EPA has proposed two changes still under public comment: extending the compliance deadline for the PFOA/PFOS limits to 2031, and rescinding the separate limits for PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA (GenX), and the Hazard Index mixture standard. Both remain proposed as of this writing โ the original 2024 limits are still legally in force until any final rule changes them.
These EPA limits apply only to public water systems. Private wells have never been covered by any federal PFAS drinking water rule, regardless of how the public-system rules change โ testing your own water is the only way to know where you actually stand.
PFAS requires a dedicated lab test โ it won't show up on a standard bacteria, mineral, or metals panel. Ask specifically for a PFAS test when ordering well water testing.
