Private well water can absolutely be used for baby formula โ€” but only after testing confirms it is safe for infants. Infants are more vulnerable than adults to several well water contaminants. Here is what to check before using well water for your baby.

The Critical Tests for Infant Safety

Nitrates โ€” The Most Important Test for Infants

Nitrates above 10 mg/L in water used for infant formula can cause methemoglobinemia (blue baby syndrome) โ€” a potentially fatal condition in infants under 6 months where the blood cannot carry enough oxygen. This is the most serious well water risk specific to infants.

Test for nitrates before your baby arrives, and retest seasonally (spring and fall) if you live in an agricultural area. Nitrate levels fluctuate with rainfall and farming activity.

What to Do If Your Well Tests Positive

If nitrates exceed 10 mg/L: Use certified bottled water or install a reverse osmosis system (which removes 85โ€“95% of nitrates) before using well water for formula. Do not boil โ€” boiling concentrates nitrates.

If bacteria are detected: Do not use well water for formula until shock chlorination and retest confirms the well is clear. Use bottled water in the interim.

If lead is detected: Run cold water for 2 minutes before drawing water for formula. Use a NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 certified lead-removing filter. Never use hot water for formula.

Fluoride and Well Water

Unlike municipal water, private well water is not fluoridated. Most well water contains naturally occurring fluoride at levels below the optimal range for dental health (0.6โ€“0.7 mg/L). Your pediatrician may recommend fluoride supplements if your well water tests below this range. However, if your well water naturally contains fluoride above 2 mg/L, use low-fluoride bottled water for formula to avoid dental fluorosis.

Test before your baby arrives. Get a comprehensive water test 3โ€“6 months before your due date. This gives you time to address any issues before you need the water for formula. Test for nitrates, bacteria, lead, and fluoride at minimum.

Ongoing Testing

Test for nitrates and bacteria annually while you have an infant in the home. Nitrate levels can change significantly from year to year in agricultural areas. Do not assume last year's test result applies this year.
