Discolored well water is one of the most alarming problems a rural homeowner can face โ€” but it is usually fixable and sometimes temporary. Here is how to determine the cause and the right response.

Step 1: Is It New or Ongoing?

Sudden onset: If your water suddenly turned brown or orange, run it for 10โ€“20 minutes. If it clears, the discoloration was likely caused by a temporary disturbance โ€” power outage, heavy rain, nearby construction, or maintenance work that stirred up sediment. If it stays discolored after extended flushing, proceed to diagnose the cause.

Ongoing/chronic: If your water is consistently brown or orange, iron or manganese in the aquifer is almost certainly the cause.

Most Common Causes

Iron in the Aquifer

The leading cause of orange/rusty well water. Dissolved ferrous iron oxidizes when exposed to air, turning water orange or brown. Levels above 0.3 mg/L cause visible discoloration. Treatment: oxidizing iron filter ($800โ€“$2,000 installed).

Manganese

Causes dark brown or black discoloration rather than orange. Often occurs alongside iron. Treatment: greensand filter or birm filter.

Disturbed Sediment

Heavy rainfall, nearby drilling or construction, or a power outage can stir sediment in the well. Usually clears after extended flushing. If it recurs after every rain event, the well casing may have a crack allowing surface water infiltration.

Corroding Pipes

Rusty water that appears brown or red and is worse after the water has sat overnight may be coming from corroding iron pipes in your home rather than the aquifer. Test the water at the main line before it enters your home โ€” if it tests clear there, the problem is your plumbing.

Well Pump or Casing

An older steel well pump or deteriorating steel well casing can shed rust into the water. A well contractor can inspect and diagnose this during a service call.

Is Discolored Water Safe to Drink?

Iron and manganese discoloration is not typically a health risk in short-term exposure, but the aesthetic quality is unacceptable and the long-term manganese health advisory warrants treatment. Bacterial contamination sometimes accompanies surface water intrusion โ€” test for bacteria whenever you see sudden unexplained discoloration.

Do not use heavily discolored water for laundry without pre-treatment. Iron and manganese permanently stain fabric. If you must do laundry, use a rust remover product specifically designed for iron-stained laundry.
